The Violence and Villains of Little Orphan Annie
The Sounding Board
Mr. Mack, as we find out, is completely ruthless. As is the case
with many of Gray's villains from this point on, there's not a
single shred of decency to be found in that person. This makes it
quite easy for Gray to set up the basic structure of good vs. evil;
with evil to be soundly and justly defeated. In a way, comic book
artist/writer Steve Ditko is a proponent of Gray's formulaic story
technique. Ditko's character, Mr. A, is a completely good
(white) character with scrupulously clean morals. The villains he
faces are completely and unequivocally evil (black) characters,
much in the same vein as Gray depicts.
